Hi ,
Just a quick note to those of you who, like me, would like to see an Australian as our Head of State, chosen by us and accountable to us.
On
Wed 12 October, the new federal Assistant Minister for a republic, Matt Thistlethwaite, will be in Melbourne along with Sandy Biar, the Australian Republic Movement's National Director, to update us all on plans for a major public education campaign leading up to a referendum on becoming a republic in a second Labor term.
Matt has been a supporter
of a republic for a long time (see a great article here on his credentials) and says, "If I can have a hand in Australia becoming a republic, I will have felt that I’ve achieved quite a bit in politics, and that’s one of the principal reasons why I
went into it. That’s my major aim at the moment."
As the multiple Morrison ministerial appointments scandal has revealed, we currently have a system where our Governor-General is accountable to his boss, a king or queen who lives on the other side of the planet, and not to the Australian people. Whatever you think of her - and the rest of the royal
family - it's time, once and for all, to cut the apron strings to the old British Empire and formalise our independence as a mature nation in our own region.
It should have happened at the turn of the 21st century but 'divide and conquer' ruled instead.
Be part of the movement to make sure it happens next time around!
Where: The Coopers Inn, 282 Exhibition St, Melbourne
When: from 6pm on Wed 12 October
Registration essential: click here to register.
Hope to see you there!
