Hi ,
Last week, 21
councillors from across Victoria sent a joint letter to the state government asking for its help in removing prayer rituals from local government meetings.
We applaud them for showing leadership on this issue, on which we have long been calling for change at the federal, state and local government levels.
In their joint letter, the ‘Victorian 21’ said the practice of reciting prayers in council was inappropriate given the multicultural and multifaith communities they represent. They also said that “freedom of religion necessarily includes freedom from religion”.
Their
action has added further momentum for the push in the state parliament to replace the daily Lord’s Prayer ritual with something more inclusive.
If you live in Victoria, can you join us in thanking the councillors and help them send a message to the state government and other councils?
