| Why God has no place in public schools (10 June
2022) By Jane Caro I know that chaplains are not supposed to proselytise. But, pardon my scepticism, in that case why must their employment depend on them being religious? And,
surely, anyone paid by the public purse to help children grapple with difficult, sometimes existential, questions should be trained and qualified? If they are trained and suitably qualified, I don’t care if people who perform these roles have a personal religious faith or not. But they should be called school counsellors, not the very loaded ‘chaplain’. |
| ‘Infiltrate, Impact, Impel’: Raising up Christians for the
Liberal Party (29 October 2022) By Si Gladman Upon signing up as a member of the Liberal Party in Victoria, some churchgoers have been handed a one-page document with the title
‘Political Participation for Godly good’, according to a Liberal Party member. The document provides a flowchart matrix to guide new members on how they can participate in their local branch meetings, known as State Electorate Convention and Federal Electorate Convention meetings. It also details how they can influence the party’s State Council and State Assembly. In the top right-hand corner appears the italicised motto: Infiltrate, Impact, Impel. |
| Why does Stan Grant’s opinion about religion pass as
‘analysis’ on the ABC? (19 February 2022) By Hugh Harris We recall the controversy surrounding Emma Alberici’s 2018 article about corporate tax cuts. Subsequently,
the ABC judged it to have crossed the line from analysis into opinion. With that in mind, consider Stan Grant’s analysis of the religious discrimination debate, ‘Does Australia have a God Problem’, and his previous article ‘With Christianity receding and many abandoning hope, today’s Christmases are not like those of my childhood.’ Both overtly favour Christianity while bemoaning the rise of secularity and secularism. |
| Why I won’t be celebrating Australia Day on 26 January (20
January 2022) By Ian Robinson Most nations on their national day celebrate something significant which they achieved – the day
they stormed the Bastille, or trudged on the Long March, or wrote the Declaration of Independence. Australia is the only nation on the planet whose national day celebrates another country’s achievement. |
| Religious chaplaincy is failing the Defence Force (25 April
2022) By Phillip Hoglin
The toll that military service has on our service personnel has long been acknowledged.
The ongoing Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide, established mid-2021, has brought this into sharper focus. The hearings have heard some truly harrowing accounts of how ‘the system’ has let service personnel down. As the Royal Commission has already heard, there are gaps in the support provided to veterans. And, when current and former ADF members fall through these gaps, the worst possible wellbeing outcomes can result. |
