Good morning ,
Back home and apparently there was an earthquake in Melbourne at
11.30pm last night. What a welcome home!
Spending 3 weeks in Europe - particularly the grand old parts of Europe - has only reinforced my view that we here in Australia are way too Anglophone-centric. Our media (such as it is) slavishly focuses on what's happening in the US and the UK, perhaps with a bit of China thrown in. It's
not only lazy journalism but gives a distorted picture of what's actually happening in the world.
Some Australians are still dazzled by the splendour and traditions of the British monarchy but seeing the sheer extravagance of old European monarchies - and the European church - put the Brits into proper perspective. But
whereas the Europeans have grown out of their feudal structures, the Brits continue to hanker for the glory days of the past. It's frankly embarrassing; we should also grow up and leave them behind.
