Not sure why Gareth has chosen to publish this piece just now, but as an eminent international jurist (and RSA patron!), Evans is always worth reading. And as a Labor Party elder, he reminds us that we shouldn't be surprised when the party fails to live up to its
own published policies: "unequivocal platform language, as most of us who have been in this business are acutely aware, has never stopped Labor governments equivocating. That has been the
case whenever they – we – have had cost-benefit doubts about the practical, principled or political wisdom of some party policy position."
