Following the release of the 2021 Census results, Dr Rebecca Banham noted that mainstream media responses to the surge in non-religious identification in Australia had been "striking".
In a 2022 article, she wrote that the media responses often reflected "a sense of disquiet – if not outright fear" about the effect of this change on society.
