When I was growing up, my father - a physician - used to read Scientific
American, then the most popular of science magazines. But like many American institutions, this venerable rag has dirtied its credentials by publishing rubbish like this - "Sex Redefined: The Idea of 2 Sexes Is Overly Simplistic." It confuses secondary sex characteristics with the defining characteristic of sex - gamete size.
Defining sex by gamete size dates from at least 100 years ago, as per this from a 1924 textbook: "It's not easy to give an adequate definition of sex ...
[but] any individual that produces ova a female, and one that produces spermatozoa a male."
