Remember the Gold Coast Meter Maids? The Coast has always had its fair share of the lunatic fringe and it seems that tradition continues with its mayor, Tom Tate. Originally a Buddhist, Tate has fallen prey to the Christian evangelicals, though his website makes no mention of it. But check out our Lead Story!

Tate has used ratepayers funds to employ an evangelical who believes in the dominionist 'Seven Mountains Mandate' (which urges Christians to 'take dominion' in 7 key spheres of social influence: government, business, education, media, entertainment, religion, and the family). Tate is facing re-election this month, with local elections taking place across Qld. "Tate’s right to personal spirituality and Christian belief is not in question. But many Gold Coasters are troubled by reports of Baynes’ ideology and her comments linking Tate to it. If the pair are seeking to extend their “kingdom assignments” another four years, surely voters deserve some straight answers."
