block changes to Census religion question11 Oct: A Liberal politician calling on the federal government to block proposed changes removing the inherent bias from the Census religious question says it is vital that data can be comparable over a long time period. In the South Australian Parliament last month, upper house member Jing Lee also warned that those wanting to “highlight growing secularism in Australian society” may “skew” the

election-eve email to branch members – on party letterhead – claiming that the state had been “captured by transgender ideology”. The email also promoted plans to ban puberty blockers for minors. The state opposition has repeatedly refused to answer questions about the email, obtained by Guardian Australia, amid growing pressure for the LNP leader, David Crisafulli, to clarify the party’s intentions on abortion, voluntary assisted dying and gender issues. | CENSUS21 ABS confirms testing will proceed for proposed new religion
question 9 Oct: The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is going ahead with testing the newly formulated religion question for the 2026 Census, it has been confirmed. In a letter to the ‘Census21 – Not Religious?’ coalition, the ABS said a mixture of testing methods would now be adopted, along with stakeholder consultation, before finalising the text of the religion question. has launched a new political movement, saying the Labor party has “lost its way”. Some in Labor had speculated whether Payman…would launch her own party with a focus on Muslim voters and others unhappy with the government’s response to the Gaza war. Labor’s proposed laws to combat online misinformation do not “strike the appropriate balance” between protecting free speech and moderating content. National Party will overturn abortion and voluntary assisted dying laws if elected on October 26. Jann Stuckey, who served in cabinet during the Newman government and quit the party in 2022, said there were "growing concerns" her old party would amend would amend VAD and abortion laws if elected. | NEW ZEALAND HERALD Census data NZ: More than half of the population has no religion 3 Oct: More than half of New Zealand’s population now has no religion
which one expert says is being driven by a shift in young people. Statistics New Zealand released the second tranche of Census 2023 data this morning. The proportion of people with “no religion” has increased from 48.2% of the population in 2018 to 51.6% or 2,576,049 people in 2023. Read the full article |
