THIS YEAR’S AGM IS SPECIAL!
I have been working for the RSA for nearly 20 years – president since 2011, and on the board for 5 years before that. It’s been a wild ride at times – particularly at the beginning when I had to spend 12 months in litigation to wrest control of members’ money from
incompetent management. But, for the most part, it’s been a true labour of love.
Now, with the rise of populism, ‘strong man’ politicians and religious nationalism around the world, doing what we can to bring reason and evidence-based decisions to public policy is even more critical than it was 20 years ago.
However, as many of you
know via RSA Daily, last year I met the love of my life (an Irish-American lapsed Catholic, for goodness’ sake!), and together we are heading off into the sunset to enjoy what we have left of life in this world. And so this will be my last AGM at the RSA.
That means there will be a vacancy on the RSA board, and I strongly encourage any of you who have some time and the necessary experience to consider putting your
hand up to join the board. They’re a good lot, very sensible, and the time commitment is not great – just a one-and-a-half-hour meeting every two months.
If you are interested, please let us know a bit about yourself and what you can bring to the board by sending an email to secretary@rationalist.com.au. Nominations need to be made by Wednesday 30 October 2024. Give it a go!
In the coming days, our Executive Director, Si Gladman, will be communicating with you again about ways you can become more involved in supporting the work of the RSA.
As this AGM will be my last, I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible there.
With sincere thanks
for all your terrific support over the years,
